What Does the Empty Tomb Declare?

(Taken from today’s devotion from Pastor’s “Precious Thought for Today” on BWTV)

Matthew 28:6—“He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.”

These words, spoken by the angel at Christ’s empty tomb to the mourning women who had come to His grave, proclaim the most glorious reality in history–the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The declaration, “He is not here: for he is risen”, transforms a place of sorrow into a testimony of triumph.

The women came expecting to find Christ’s body still in the tomb. They had brought spices to anoint Him in death. Yet the angel’s invitation, “Come, see the place where the Lord lay”, emphasises the physical reality of the resurrection while also underscoring the grave’s temporary nature. The tomb was not merely empty; it had been vacated.

In the middle of the angel’s proclamation is a reminder: “as he said”. It was an affirmation that what has now occurred stands firmly upon what Christ had previously predicted. These words anchor the resurrection in the faithfulness of Christ Himself. Jesus had repeatedly foretold His suffering, death, and resurrection (cf. Matthew 16:21; 20:19), and now His promise stands fulfilled. The empty tomb is a promise kept.

This is the theological heartbeat of the passage. The resurrection of Jesus was not an unfortunate accident. It was the fulfilment of His own word and of divine prophecy. By rising from the dead, Christ confirmed His identity as the Son of God and demonstrated that His sacrifice for sin was accepted by the Father. In God’s redemptive plan, the resurrection is the receipt of our redemption. His resurrection was the declaration that the debt has been paid in full.

It speaks directly to our deepest fears, like death, the grave, and judgment. Praise be to God, death does not have the final victory!

Because the angel’s message remains true, we now serve a living Saviour, who is not defined by where He was, but by who He is. Even today, we are invited to “come and see” that Christ has kept His Word in conquering the grave. And just as surely, He will keep His promise to raise all who believe in Him.

Let us, therefore, trust His Word, rejoice in His victory, and live in the power of His resurrection.

I thank God for the blessing of being raised in a Christian family and a Bible-believing church, where I have been instructed in the Word of God from a young age. By His grace and mercy, He convicted me of my sins and of my need for a Saviour, and enabled me to turn to Him in repentance and to believe in Jesus Christ as my Lord and Saviour.

I praise God for Gethsemane Bible-Presbyterian Church, where, even from young, I have been grounded in the sure foundation of God’s Word. It is certainly a blessing to have many opportunities throughout the week to study and meditate on God’s Word. I also thank the Lord for giving me many areas in which I can serve Him with my best. These include the Youth Choir, the slide-clicking ministry, the ushering and greeting ministry, and even helping to set up for worship services.

I thank God for our church leaders—Pastor, the elders, preachers, and deacons—who lead our church to be more conformed to His Word and who are examples for us to follow. I also thank God that I am surrounded by mature believers and godly friends who encourage and edify me in my spiritual walk.

I pray that, as I continue my pilgrim journey on this earth, I will persevere in the battle against sin, grow spiritually, and live according to His will. I pray that God will mould me to be more like Christ, enable me to serve Him better, and use me for His glory.

“But now, O LORD, thou art our father; we are the clay, and thou our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand” (Isaiah 64:8).

All glory and praise be to God.

I thank God for granting me the privilege of growing up in a Christian household where from a young age, my parents would bring me to church every week. I attended Junior Worship classes and the Gethsemane Children’s Ministry, which allowed me to learn many biblical truths, and taught me the importance of putting my trust in God. Romans 6:23 says, “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” For all have sinned, and deserve to suffer the penalty of sin, which is death; yet God, in His unconditional love, sent His only begotten Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, to die on the cross for our sins, that we may believe on Him, and have everlasting life.

Lamentations 3:22 reminds us, “It is of the LORD’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.” I thank God for saving me and keeping me steadfast in my faith, as well as helping me to continually grow in grace and in the knowledge of the Bible. I also thank God for allowing me to attend Sunday services where Pastor and other preachers faithfully and diligently preach from the Bible. Praise God too for the privilege to attend the Gethsemane Youth Fellowship, and to serve in the Youth Choir – to sing praises and glorify God with my voice. I was happy to join the Catechism Class, taught by Elder Francis and Elder Choy, which has enabled me to learn more of the wondrous truths in the Bible.

As I grow in faith, I pray that I will continue to love and fear God and be a God-honouring Christian in all that I say or do. May I learn to share the Gospel with those around me, that they may also come to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. All praise and glory be unto God!

I was brought to Calvary Pandan Bible-Presbyterian Church from a young age, but I did not fully understand the purpose of attending church. Life was plain sailing until I faced my first major trial during my O-Level examinations, where I struggled with anxiety and low confidence. Thank God for my sister who encouraged me with God’s Word and reminded me to do my best for His glory and leave the results to the Lord.

Although God helped me through that period, I often forgot His blessings and only prayed in times of need. Through my sister’s constant reminders about my salvation, I realised during a family devotion that I was not truly saved. I repented of my sins and accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as my Saviour.

During the COVID pandemic, I listened to sermons from various BP churches, including Gethsemane BPC. By God’s leading, I began attending worship services here in Gethsemane. The church’s emphasis on prayer and godly living has encouraged me greatly, and I thank God for the opportunity to serve in the Lions Home ministry. I pray that the Lord will help me serve Him faithfully and be a blessing to the brethren in Gethsemane.

When my son was studying in ACJC more than forty years ago, he had to attend chapel devotion as a requirement. It was then that he first heard the Gospel, which touched his heart. When he returned home from school, he would speak to his mum about the Lord Jesus Christ. He encouraged us all in the family to make an attempt to attend church service each Lord’s Day. My son then took his mother and two sisters to church each Lord’s Day for service. My wife, upon her return from church, would speak to me about the Gospel every Sunday night to encourage me to attend church. At that time, I was still an idol worshipper, praying to the Chinese god of heaven, but I was ready to attend church together with my whole family. An elder of the church (Dr Cheng Wei Nien) was very helpful, for he sat with me and flip the pages of the Bible for me during Scripture reading. Dr Tow Siang Hwa preached on that Lord’s Day and indeed, the message touched my heart. After attending church services on a few more occasions, I decided to give up my idol-worshipping. The idol was finally removed from my home, as I had decided to become a believer. In December 1984, my whole family was baptised at Calvary Pandan BPC.

As my wife was educated in Mandarin, she found it difficult to understand what was being preached. Each time when we got home, I had to explain to her the whole Gospel that was preached. After a period of discussion, we made the choice to worship at the Chinese Service of Life BPC. We were initially comfortable attending the service. However, after some time, a misunderstanding arose with a staff member who spoke rudely to my wife regarding a close friend of ours. This incident left us deeply unsettled, and since then, we increasingly felt unwelcome on each Lord’s Day we attended. It was then that we decided to look for another church to worship. Having participated in the Gethsemane Chinese Retreat in Malacca last year through the help of sisters Beng Yan and Beng Hwee, and also having met Pastor Koshy, we gave it a thought – why not attend Gethsemane BPC since many of our friends from BPCs are worshipping here. Besides, we have also been welcomed by Pastor Koshy. After worshipping here for more than six months, we have decided to transfer our membership to Gethsemane BPC. We are looking forward to being received by the Pastor, the Elders, Preachers and also the Deacons in Gethsemane BPC.

Importance of Christ's Resurrection

1 Corinthians 15:3b-4 "Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures."

The resurrection of Jesus Christ is a very important doctrine of our Christian faith. Some of the important implications of Christ’s resurrection are mentioned below:

  • Christ’s resurrection was prophesied in the Old Testament; so His resurrection proves that the Bible is true in all that it says, even about the future (Isaiah 53:10; Job 19:25-26; Psalms 16:9-11; 110:1).
  • Christ’s resurrection from the dead proves that God has accepted His sacrifice for our sins (1 Peter 1:21).
  • If Jesus had not been raised from the dead, the Gospel that we preach is not true, and all who believe on it would perish (1 Corinthians 15:17).
  • Our justification was secured by Christ’s obedience to death, and therefore He was raised from the dead (Romans 4:25).
  • Christ’s resurrection is also a pledge of the resurrection of all believers (Romans 8:11; 1 Corinthians 6:14; 15:47-49; Philippians 3:21; 1 John 3:2).
  • Because Christ is risen, He therefore now lives in heaven to intercede for us before the Father (Romans 8:34), and also to prepare a place in heaven for us (John 14:2-3).

Asher Vijayandran

“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new” (2 Corinthians 5:17).

I was born and raised in a Hindu family, praying and offering sacrifices to idols. Growing up, like most of the teens in my neighbourhood, I started mixing around with bad company. I joined gangs and started smoking and drinking. I even became very rebellious and strayed to the wrong path, engaging in all kinds of illegal activities, including peddling of drugs on the streets. Soon, I started abusing drugs and became addicted myself. My parents detested me and my siblings wished I were dead. I failed in my responsibility as a son and a brother. All I cared for was my friends in the drug circle. Because of my drug addiction, I’d been in and out of prison 6 times!

On my second last “visit” (i.e. my 5th time) to prison where I was sentenced 2 years, I started attending Chapel and Bible services inside prison, but I wasn’t too serious about it. Upon my release in 2013, one of my childhood friends, Rufus, kept talking to me about Jesus and his church. During that time, I was going through a lot of financial and social problems, I started drinking a lot and also consuming a lot of depression pills. Out of desperation one day, I “blindly” followed my friend Rufus to this big church called “New Creation Church”. During the worship, I felt so guilty about what kind of person I was and whatever I did in my life. The pastor, after preaching about “Love of God Calling Sinners to Repentance and New Life in Christ”, asked who wanted to accept Christ. I immediately put up my hand and repeated the sinner’s prayer. After that church service, I signed up for water baptism, and I was baptized in New Creation Church on 17 May 2014.

Though a new Christian, I wasn’t really serious in my walk with God. I just thought it was “cool” being a Christian worshipping in a mega church. I really didn’t understand the truth of God’s salvation work. New Creation Church kept preaching about the Gospel of grace, and that we need not worry about our current and future sins because Jesus had paid for them at the cross. I took it somehow as a licence to sin because I had the misguided confidence that whatever sins I did, Jesus will forgive them. I backslided, and somehow went back to my old ways. Soon, I stopped attending church and chose to spend time with my drug circle friends once more. Sadly, I was back on drugs and again ended up in prison (for the 6th time). At that point of time, my family really gave up all hope on me. They even said that the so-called Hindu gods were angry and were punishing me for becoming a Christian. I knew I deserved all the bad things they said about me, but it really pained me and made me feel so guilty when they despised Christianity because I had brought shame to it.

That was when I went on my knees inside my prison cell and cried out to God. I asked God for forgiveness and told Him to guide me henceforth. I started reading my Bible every day, as well as attending the in-prison Bible Study conducted by Pr Kelvin from Gethsemane BPC. Slowly, Pr Kelvin guided me and taught me God’s Word. God also gave me a strong desire to read His Word. When I was out of prison and came to “The Helping Hand” for my rehabilitation programme, I continued to keep in touch with Pr Kelvin, who invited me to Gethsemane Church a few months later. I thank God for this church and for Pastor Koshy who expounds God’s Word accurately and teaches us without fear or favour. My belief system and way of thinking changed as I was impacted by the messages, week after week in Gethsemane. I really am so grateful to the Lord for Gethsemane that I decided to be a member after a year of attending the church. By the grace of God, I have faithfully attended all of the lessons of the Catechism Class.

During this Catechism Class, I have learnt much truth from God’s Word. I’ve learnt much about Creation and the origin of man; about what sin is and how much God hates sin; about our Lord Jesus Christ’ life, death and resurrection; about God’s plan of salvation; about bearing a good testimony for Christ and prayer; about the end-times and the Lord’s return. Through this Catechism Class, I have been taught the doctrinal stand of GBPC, as opposed to the false teachings of the Charismatic Movement.

I have learnt a lot after attending Gethsemane. God has opened my eyes to His Truth. I really want to thank God for His grace and mercy for me that have found and met me at the lowest point in my life. As broken relationships in my family are being restored, I want my family to witness my redeemed life and see the living God working in my life. God has opened a way for me to take part-time courses at FEBC. I want to encourage more brothers like me who are in the bondage of drugs and are suffering silently. I pray that God will show mercy on all these souls that I will be reaching out to. I am so grateful to God, and the leaders of this church for working so hard for Christ. I want to be a part of Gethsemane Church. Finally, after learning the truth about baptism and the reason why we believers have to go through it, I sincerely wish to be baptized and continue growing here as well. May God answer my heartfelt prayer, and may His “goodness and mercy … follow me all the days of my life” (Psalm 23:6).

Valentina Quezon

I was born and raised in a Roman Catholic family in the Philippines. I grew up, being surrounded with non-Christian friends influencing me to drink and do many worldly things. In year 2017, I was invited to a Christian church, where by the power of God’s Word preached by the pastor, I believe in Jesus that day. Jesus said in John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me”. I rejoiced in this verse and was convicted that Jesus is the only way for me to be saved as a sinner.

In 2021, the Lord answered my prayer and led me to Singapore to work as a domestic helper. Deep in my heart I felt something missing, as I wanted to go to church and worship God but didn’t know how. One day, I met Asher Vijay on Facebook, where he invited me to worship at GBPC. When I first attended GBPC on 24 March 2022, I was impressed by the warm and welcoming church people, who also invited me to attend GFF. For a foreigner like me coming from overseas to work here, this felt like “home” to me. By continually attending GBPC, I got to know more and more of God’s truth in His Word. Pastor Koshy’s preaching is very encouraging and motivating for me as a new believer. It helps me to learn to walk more closely with the Lord, and not in the ways of the world.

God has put a desire in my heart to attend the Catechism Class, and I thank God for the opportunity to learn His Word, and for such a blessing for my spiritual life. Thank God for the church elders who teach this Catechism Class. Through the true teaching of the Bible, I began to understand many church doctrines and Gospel truths which I previously didn’t know about. God showed me how much He loved and cared for me by sending His only begotten Son Jesus Christ to live a perfect life that I cannot live. Though I have been living a sinful life, yet because of His love for me, He died a horrific death on the cross for my past, present and future sins. He thus became my Substitute for my sins. I know that I have been living a selfish life of materialistic ambitions and self-delusion. I’ve cried to God, and I repent of my sins and surrender my life to Him. Not only I must believe, but I must also surrender everything to Him, and follow Him by obeying His words and commandments. I will trust and love Jesus with all my heart, and mind, and strength, because He has loved me first.

Though difficulties and struggles may come, and relationships may fail, I will trust in Him. I do not know what the future holds for me, but I know my heavenly Father holds my future. “One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple” (Psalm 27:4). I thank God for GBPC and for all His faithful servants. To God be the glory and honour.

Significance of Christ's Resurrection

Today, as we commemorate the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, it behoves us to meditate on the importance and blessings of that amazing event in the earthly life and ministry of the Lord Jesus. To stir our minds to rejoice with thanksgiving, I would like to share with you the fivefold significance of Christ’s resurrection.

First, Christ’s resurrection proved His divine Sonship.

The apostle Paul wrote concerning Christ, who “was made of the seed of David according to the flesh”, that He was “declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead” (Rom. 1:3-4). It’s not that Jesus Christ wasn’t the Son of God prior to His resurrection. He is the eternal Son of God (Ps. 2:7, 12; Pr. 30:4). When Christ came in the flesh, He set aside the full expression and use of His divine glory and prerogatives. Paul explains it in Philippians 2:5-8 this way: “Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: but made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.”

Certainly, His virgin birth, miracles and teaching all bore witness to His deity. The ultimate, irrefutable evidence of the divine Sonship of Christ was the power with which He resurrected from the dead. His bodily resurrection from the grave on the third day was the supreme demonstration of His divine power over sin, death and Satan. Such power can only belong to God, and thus His resurrection proved beyond all doubt that He was indeed God the Son. In fact, Peter asserted in his sermon on the day of Pentecost that Christ being the Son of God, it was impossible that He remained dead in the grave – “Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it” (Acts 2:24). It was not possible for Christ to be held by death. Death and grave could not keep the omnipotent Christ under their power. He rose from the grave, as a divine declaration that Christ – who was crucified and died – was indeed the Son of God, truly divine!

Second, Christ’s resurrection guarantees our justification.

Romans 4:25 declares that Christ “was delivered for our offences and was raised again for our justification.” Because His resurrection has secured our justification, we are no more under God’s condemnation. So, Romans 8:34 asks, “Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.” His resurrection and ascension guaranteed the cancellation of God’s handwriting that was against us because of our sin. Colossians 2:13-14 says, “And you, being dead in your sins…, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses; blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us…” If Christ did not resurrect, we would still be in our sins. 1 Corinthians 15:17 says, “And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins.”

Third, Christ’s resurrection assures us that our Saviour now lives and intercedes for us.

This truth is taught by the apostle Paul in Rom. 8:34 – “Christ that died… is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.” Heb. 7:25 testifies that Christ’s present intercession on the right hand of the Father in heaven is an assuring truth – “Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.” The risen Christ now lives in heaven to intercede for us. Heb. 9:24 explains it thus: “For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us”.

Fourth, Christ’s resurrection power renews and empowers us to live a new life.

The apostle Paul explains this truth in Romans 6:4 – “Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.” All of us, who have been united to (“baptised into”) Christ by the Spirit baptism at the time when we first trusted Him, are dead with Him to sin and are spiritually raised up to live a spiritually new life in Christ. Later, in Rom. 6:8–11, Paul further describes the new life in Christ – “Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him: knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.” We are not the same people we once were. We who were dead in our trespasses and sins have been made alive together with Christ (cf. Eph. 2:2, 5)!

Fifth, Christ’s resurrection grants us a glorious hope of our future resurrection.

1 Cor. 15:20–23 declares, “But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept. For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ’s at his coming.” Likewise, the apostle Paul instructs us in 1 Thess 4:13–14, “But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.” In the words of the apostle Peter, it is the “lively hope” that Christ’s resurrection pledges unto us – “… his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead” (1 Pet. 1:3).
