Nahum 1:7—“The LORD is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him.”
Nahum had just announced the coming destruction of Nineveh, the capital of the cruel Assyrian empire. Amid declarations of divine wrath, this verse assures God’s people of His goodness and protection. The God who judges His enemies is the refuge of those who trust Him.
“The LORD is good”. His goodness is constant, even when circumstances are distressing. Judah had suffered under Assyrian oppression, but their troubles did not mean that God had ceased to care. His righteous judgment against their oppressors would itself demonstrate His goodness. We must understand His character through His Word rather than measure it by our immediate experiences.
He is “a strong hold in the day of trouble”. A stronghold provides security against attacking enemies. God Himself is His people’s defence. This promise does not exempt them from suffering; it assures them that trouble cannot overthrow His sovereign care or defeat His gracious purposes.
“He knoweth them that trust in him”. This knowledge includes His loving recognition and watchful concern. Those who seek refuge in Him are never overlooked, forgotten, or abandoned. He knows their fears, needs, and weaknesses.
Dear reader, where do you turn when trouble comes? Earthly supports may fail, but the LORD remains good and faithful. Flee to Him through Jesus Christ. Rest in His promises, bring your burdens before Him, and remember: the One who governs every storm knows you.
