What Do Your Words Reveal About Your Heart?

Matthew 12:34—“O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.”

Jesus spoke these searching words after the Pharisees attributed His deliverance of a demon-possessed man to Satan’s power. Their accusation revealed hostility towards Christ despite the clear evidence of the Spirit’s work. Their words exposed the corruption within them.

Calling them a “generation of vipers”, Jesus exposed the poisonous nature of their opposition. Their religious standing could not conceal their wickedness. His question, “how can ye, being evil, speak good things?” showed that truly good speech requires a good heart. Polished language cannot make an evil heart righteous.

“For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh” explains the link between our inward condition and our outward words. What fills the heart finds expression on the lips. Resentment produces bitter speech; pride breeds boasting; unbelief voices opposition to God. Conversely, a heart shaped by divine grace brings forth truthful, gracious, and edifying words.

Our deepest need, therefore, is more than improved manners or restrained speech. We need the cleansing and renewal that only Christ provides. Even believers must continually guard their hearts and submit their thoughts and desires to Scripture.

Examine your conversations today. What do your complaints, criticisms, and casual remarks reveal? In the verses that follow, Jesus warns that we must account for our words. Confess sinful speech, seek His forgiveness, and pray for a heart increasingly filled with His truth, humility, and love.
