our story
How We Started

Grace B-P Church @ 5 Jalan Haji Salam
The church began in the mid‑1980s as an offshoot of Grace Bible-Presbyterian Church. A small group of brethren, recognizing a need for a complementary evening service, embarked on a new journey in 1988. On March 5, 1988, about 30 members and friends launched the ministry in Katong, with an inaugural service held at a function room in Duke Hotel. The late Rev. Timothy Tow, who had 12 years earlier commissioned the church work at Grace, delivered the word of God that evening. Although the early days saw modest attendance and passionate outreach efforts in local communities, the church faced a severe setback in early 1989 when three‑quarters of the congregation left. Despite the challenge, the remaining members persevered. The church decided to reorganizing their worship by rejoining the mother church premises in October 1989 as an evening service, and received much-needed support from brethren like Bro. Abednego from Ghana.
How We’ve Grown

Gethsemane @ Aida Street (1993)
In the years that followed, Gethsemane experienced steady and evolving growth. In 1990, after much prayer and discussion, a new vision was set: to develop a distinct identity, move to a new location, and become an autonomous Bible‑Presbyterian church. Leadership transitions and the arrival of new ministers—such as Bro. Prabhudas Koshy, who later became the church's pastor—helped steer the church through this transformative period. The church successfully registered as an independent entity in 1995. Over time, Gethsemane expanded its range of ministries—from Sunday schools to various fellowship groups—and in 1999 shifted its worship back to the morning, moving to the Metropolitan YMCA Building in Geylang. When the need for a new space arose in 2000, the congregation found its current home at Singapore Post Centre in 2001. Since then, continuous adaptation and a growing community have marked our church’s journey into maturity.
Where We’re Headed

Gethsemane's 7th Missionary Conference (2024)
Over the years, heeding to the Lord Jesus Christ's commission to "Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature" (Mark 16:15), Gethsemane has supported multiple preachers and missionaries to spread the gospel throughout the nations. Today, we have mission stations in the Philippines, Ethiopia, India, China, and East Malaysia. We established Gethsemane Bible Institute in order to train and prepare men for the preaching ministry. We also have the Bible Witness Media Ministry, which produces sound, biblical audio-visual resources that are used to proclaim God's Word throughout the whole world. And we're not done yet. As Charles Wesley's famous hymn puts it, our mission is "O for a thousand tongues to sing my great Redeemer's praise, the glories of my God and King, the triumphs of his grace!" We continue to pray for God's grace that "is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us" (Ephesians 3:20).
