About 11 years ago, we began TGCM, because we were moved by His gracious and assuring words:
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord” (Luke 4:18-19).
11 years later, we are glad to testify that the counsel of His words has kept us strong in this Gospel ministry. Because we trusted His Word, we are given much clarity concerning the ministry’s programme, discipline, challenges, experiences, responses, etc. We are grateful for His unfailing wisdom that has guided us to this day. We are convicted that for TGCM to be a Christ-honouring ministry, it must move forward according to His counsels.
TGCM’s commitment to the Word of God has been much tested in the past year, but God did not allow our hearts to faint.
Some of the comments about TGCM were meant to discredit and discourage us. Surely, some words have been “like the piercings of a sword”. People have been told that we are “too narrow-minded”, “too strict” and “like a prison”, etc. Such comments were said because the residents were not allowed to engage in unwholesome activities like smoking, uttering vulgarities, drinking, etc. Some others disparagingly said that there is “no prospect”, “no future” for those who continue with TGCM. Those comments were meant to persuade residents to leave TGCM to pursue a carnal and materialistic life. Such efforts have sadly hindered many from coming to TGCM.
The Word of the Lord has been our anchor in the midst of such a storm. Our commitment to His words concerning how we should run the ministry, has kept us steady. We were not distracted by their words, as our minds were guarded by the clear and firm counsels of His Word. The way of the Gospel is holy and clean, and hence we were not willing to go the way of the world.
We rather abide by Jesus’ words than be persuaded by man’s words. He says, “Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it” (Matthew 7:13-14).
TGCM has also been under much financial constraints. The income that residents earn through removal services (which is the main source of income) has been considerably reduced, because of the economic slowdown in Singapore and the extremely quiet property market. We thank God that He has provided hitherto through the generous gifts of God’s people, and through the support of Gethsemane B-P Church. We trust in all His promises, including: “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: for every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone? Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent? If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?” (Matthew 7:7-11).
At His Word, we have launched out, and by His Word, we shall heed, trust and do all that He has commanded. So, help us, O Lord.
