Christ Gives Light To Make Us Children Of Light

READ:

John 12:34-36

34 The people answered him, We have heard out of the law that Christ abideth for ever: and how sayest thou, The Son of man must be lifted up? who is this Son of man? 35 Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth. 36 While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light. These things spake Jesus, and departed, and did hide himself from them.

Isaiah 42:6, 7

6 I the LORD have called thee in righteousness, and will hold thine hand, and will keep thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles; 7 To open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the prison, and them that sit in darkness out of the prison house.

EXHORTATION:

W

hen the audience heard from Jesus that He would die, they could not reconcile how such a tragic end would come to their Messiah. So they argued that He would not die. When they asked  “who is this son of man?” they were simply asking what kind of son of man is Jesus if He is going to die? It is true that the Scripture teaches that the Lord liveth forever; and yet it also teaches that He would die bearing our sins. But death and grave cannot keep Him. He will resurrect and live for ever. They were not ready to believe Him by faith!

So once again Jesus appealed to them to receive Him by faith. He told them that He alone could give the  “light” that would make them “the children of light.” Instead of doubting His truth, they should believe and walk in its light. “Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth.” Those who reject Christ and His words are in danger, for they do not know the severe consequence of their rejection.

After the warning against rejection, Jesus gave the crowd His final call to believe Him that they may become the children of light. Children of light are all those who believe and observe the words of the Lord Jesus. So when Jesus exhorted His hearers to “believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light,” He was also promising them the privilege to become the children of God by believing in Him.
