Nurture of Godliness

Written by Rev (Dr) Prabhudas Koshy Sunday, 05 July 2015

An Exposition of 2 Peter 1:3-4

According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust” — (2 Peter 1:3-4).

Diana Chan

Ithank God for a very blessed Church Camp with rich spiritual feeding of God’s Word, as well as for safety, strength and protection. Thank God for our camp speakers (our pastor, Rev Prabhudas Koshy, and Rev Tan Kian Sing), for Elder Ng and the Camp Committee, games organisers, preachers, pianists, AV team, JW committee, Elder Eliezer and Sis Arlaine, Preacher Edsel and all the brethren who served in other ways. Praise God for all their labour of love for the Camp.

Thank God for the many valuable lessons which I have learnt from the Morning Devotions, Prayer Meetings, video clips on the mission trips to Cebu / Pangasinan and other parts of the Philippines, as well as the Question-and-Answer sessions....

Testimonies of Church Camp 2015

Sunday, 21 June 2015

We praise God for last week’s church camp (June 15-19) held at Holiday Inn, Batam, in which 215 members and friends participated. Great spiritual blessings were poured upon the congregation, as they were brought under the exposition of God’s perfect Word. There were repentance, renewal of hearts and rededication of hearts to God’s glory. We thank God for the preachers and the camp organisers who laboured with great devotion to the Lord. Today we publish some of the testimonies; more will be published in the coming weeks.

Gethsemane BPC, Ethiopia, is 9 years old!

Written by Rev (Dr) Prabhudas Koshy Sunday, 14 June 2015

Our Ethiopian mission church has just held their 9th Anniversary Thanksgiving Service. We have received a brief report and some photos of the event, which are published below.

Our preparation for the Ethiopian mission began in January 1999, when Bro Ephrem Chiracho came to Singapore as an FEBC student. As he pursued his theological studies in FEBC, he attended Gethsemane BPC. Later his wife, Sis Gete, also joined him here in Singapore. Together...

Learning to Pray from the Book of Psalms – Part 2

Written by Pr Andrew Koh Sunday, 07 June 2015

In the first part of this article, I have pointed out that we can learn precious lessons about praying in a God-pleasing manner from the Book of Psalms. 5 major elements stand out in the prayers recorded in the Psalms: (1) Praises of God, (2) Thanksgiving, (3) Petitions and Lamentations, (4) Confessions of Sins, and (5) Expectations. I have briefly discussed the first two of those elements in the first part; the rest will be deliberated in today’s article...

Learning to Pray from the Book of Psalms - Part I

Written by Pr Andrew Koh Sunday, 31 May 2015

When a person becomes a Christian, one of the first spiritual activities he will be introduced to is praying. Very often, praying can be a very daunting endeavour. We often hear many new (and sometimes, even experienced) Christians ask questions like, “Am I praying correctly?” “Is God pleased with the things that I utter in my prayers?” “Will God listen to me?” Therefore, praying aright is a serious concern to Christians of all levels of spiritual maturity. “Template” prayers that lack authenticity and sincerity are often heard. It is sad that many Christians do not know how to pray in a proper manner. As praying is communing with the Most High God, it is most important that prayers be uttered in a God-pleasing way; hence Christians must learn how to pray aright. Praying aright brings about many spiritual benefits to a Christian, enabling us to not only receive answers to our prayers, but also spiritual blessings from God....

From You Sounded out the Word of the Lord

Written by Rev (Dr) Prabhudas Koshy Sunday, 24 May 2015

Calling for your prayerful participation in the upcoming church events

Dear brethren,

Several important events are lined up in the coming few weeks to spread the glorious Gospel of our Lord Jesus near and far. Your prayers, participation, cooperation and contributions are much coveted. Children, youths, adults and seniors alike must rise up to serve the Lord with joy and enthusiasm.

May what was said about the Thessalonian church be true of our church also – “For from you sounded out the word of the Lord not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place your faith to God-ward is spread abroad...

Report of 10th Anniversary Thanksgiving Service of the Seniors’ Ministry

Written by Rev (Dr) Prabhudas Koshy Sunday, 17 May 2015

The Seniors’ Ministry praise God for her 10th anniversary thanksgiving held on 7 May 2015 at Aloha Changi Chalet. It was a blissful and fruitful day where the elderly gathered to commemorate and recount God’s amazing grace and mercy bestowed upon them in this ministry for the past 10 years.

We arrived at the chalet at 9.40am. There was delightful laughter as the elderly folks appreciated the melodious singing of the various kinds of birds, as well as the awesome sea view which the chalet afforded...

Church Leaders’ Pitfalls - II

Written by Rev (Dr) Prabhudas Koshy Sunday, 10 May 2015

Continued from last week...

Pitfall #4: Wallowing in Self-pity that Excuses Worry, Bitterness and Other Sins

The struggles of a church leader are seldom fully understood, let alone empathised, by those who are around him. The apostle Paul has succinctly captured the troubles of the church leaders when he wrote: “We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed” (2 Corinthians 4:8-9).

Some in the ministry have been so plagued by problems that they allow their souls to plunge into self-pity and many other sins that accompany anxiety, worry and fear. Some leaders have used their needs, loneliness, problems to excuse their sins of greed, theft, sexual promiscuity, abusive behaviour, etc...

Church Leaders’ Pitfalls - I

Written by Rev (Dr) Prabhudas Koshy Sunday, 03 May 2015

Church leaders are not free from the temptations of sin. They need to be always on guard lest they be suddenly overtaken by the deceitfulness of sin. My prayer is that the Biblical expose of the deceitfulness of sin that surrounds church leaders will further intensify our vigilance and prayer so that we may keep ourselves pure for the work of the Lord.!

Pitfall #1: Having a Sense of Self-Glory and Vindictiveness

The apostle John wrote about an early church leader who walked into this pitfall. “I wrote unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the preeminence among them, receiveth us not” (3 John 9)...

The Call to Church Leadership

Written by Rev (Dr) Prabhudas Koshy Sunday, 26 April 2015

God has always called upon leaders to guide His people. In 1 Samuel 13:14, we read, “The LORD hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the LORD hath commanded him to be captain over his people.” God told Ezekiel, “I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none” (Ezekiel 22:30).

Church Leadership is a Calling from the Lord

When it comes to who should be appointed to church leadership, let it not be taken lightly that only those whom God has called to the office should be appointed...

The Assaults of the Enemy

Written by Rev (Dr) Prabhudas Koshy Sunday, 19 April 2015

In opposing and rebelling against God, Satan and his demons target their attacks at the believers. It is because of their hostile activities that Christians are caught in that intense struggle mentioned by the apostle Paul in Ephesians 6:12, “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” These satanic forces are unleashed against us to accomplish “the wiles (schemes) of the devil” (Ephesians 6:11). Satan and the demons are constantly conniving to discourage and defeat the saints in their individual and corporate life and ministry...

Facts About Prayer

Written by Rev (Dr) Prabhudas Koshy Sunday, 12 April 2015

In these days, prayer in the Christian realm is increasingly putting on the characteristics of unbiblical mysticism of the oriental religions. Prayers of Christians ought to be guided and moulded by biblical injunctions and patterns of prayer. The following characteristics of biblical prayer can be of help to maintain proper prayer habits.

Prayer should always be Godward

Prayer is unidirectional – believers speaking to God and Him alone. Philippians 4:6 says, “Let your requests be made known unto God” (cf. Nehemiah 4:9; Acts 12:5). Jesus said, “Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve” (Matthew 4:10)...

The Appearances of the Risen Christ

Written by Rev (Dr) Prabhudas Koshy Sunday, 05 April 2015

The New Testament affirms the resurrection of Christ as a historical event. The gospels and the epistles recorded the appearances of the Risen Christ. Moreover, the apostles insisted on His resurrection in their public teaching. Many appearances of our risen Lord are recorded in the New Testament.

Consider the following New Testament records of the risen Christ’s appearances. (The following section is adapted from Easton’s Bible Dictionary. New York: Harper & Brothers...

Boasting in the Cross

The Gracious Providence of God over Singapore and our Church

Written by Rev (Dr) Prabhudas Koshy Sunday, 29 March 2015

Today, we feel sadness and happiness in our hearts – sadness, because of the death of the remarkable first prime minister and builder of modern Singapore, Mr Lee Kuan Yew; happiness, because of the 27th Anniversary of our beloved church, Gethsemane B-P Church, Singapore.

Like all grateful citizens and residents of Singapore, we too mourn the death of Singapore’s much respected leader (on Monday, Mar 23, at 3.18am), who was aptly credited with the title “father of modern Singapore” by local and international dignitaries. Mr Lee was an unusually talented politician and, more importantly...

A Word to Those Who are Preparing to Go to Mission Stations

Written by Rev (Dr) Prabhudas Koshy Sunday, 22 March 2015

If the Lord be pleased to bless our plans for the mission trips to the Philippines at the end of May, our church shall see two teams of brethren from our midst making the journey to our mission stations in the Philippines. One group, led by Eld Mah Chin Kwang, will visit and minister to churches in Cebu and Bohol, while the other group, led by Pr Dennis Kabingue, will minister in Pangasinan.

Those who have signed up to join the abovementioned mission trips, will be notified of their contributory parts by the respective leaders of the mission teams. Duties for all the participants will be assigned by the team leaders, according to the spiritual maturity and experience of the team members. Whatever be the part you are assigned, please earnestly pray that your visitation will be a blessing to the believers in our mission stations....

Be Battle Ready

Written by Rev (Dr) Prabhudas Koshy Sunday, 15 March 2015

Ephesians 6:13 “Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.”

Christians need to arm themselves with “the whole armour of God” for their “adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour” (1 Peter 5:8). Our enemies are more than flesh and blood. In Ephesians 6:12, Paul says, “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places...

Fasting & Prayer

Written by Rev (Dr) Prabhudas Koshy Sunday, 08 March 2015

In preparation for the upcoming Church fasting and prayer
The frequent practice of fasting in both the Old Testament and New Testaments indicates that there is much value in the practice. For the Christian, that value always lies in the connection of fasting with prayer. Fasting with sincere prayer is what we should pursue.

The Teachings of Jesus & the Apostles on Fasting

There are those who say that fasting (for prayer) is not a spiritual exercise for the New Testament church. Many also seem to ignore fasting altogether...

Christ Promises Freedom!

Written by Rev (Dr) Prabhudas Koshy Sunday, 01 March 2015

Man is enslaved to sin, guilt, fear, sadness and death. No man can free himself or another. However, Jesus proclaimed to men, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised” (Luke 4:18; cf. Isaiah 61:1).

In John 8:31–36, Jesus revealed how he would free man from his bondage: “31Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; 32And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. 33They answered him, We be Abraham’s seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free...

Christians and Courtesy

Written by Rev (Dr) Prabhudas Koshy Sunday, 22 February 2015

Godly Civility of Christians

Though Christians are free in the Lord Jesus Christ, they must not act irresponsibly in the societies which God has placed them in. The apostle Peter cautions Christians, “As free, and not using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness, but as the servants of God” (1 Peter 2:16). Then, in order to guide Christians in their proper conduct as God’s servants in their respective communities, Peter gives them four rules of conduct on their behaviour in society – “Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king” (1 Peter 2:17).

Firstly, Peter commands Christians to “honour all men”. Believers must treat every person with dignity and respect. Respect and honour must be accorded to even unbelievers as human beings. We must recognize the worth of all human beings in God’s sight and live so as to attract them to faith in Christ. A contemptuous disposition will not help us in our efforts to win them for Christ. The poor and the afflicted in society must not be despised. Proverbs 17:5 says...

Be Warned: Hell is Real

Written by Rev (Dr) Prabhudas Koshy Sunday, 15 February 2015

It is becoming fashionable among many preachers and Christians to deny the reality of a fiery hell, where God will eternally punish the unrepentant sinners. They deny the literal understanding of the biblical description of hell. It is foolish and perilous to deny the biblical warnings of hell, for it will deceive sinners to think that there will be no severe consequences to their sins and rejection of God.

In Revelation 20:14-15, the reality of hell is declared thus: “And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire...

Beware of Profane Music!

Written by Rev (Dr) Prabhudas Koshy Sunday, 08 February 2015

Does it matter what sort of music one listens to?

A large number of Christians of our time have no qualms about listening to and singing worldly music. After singing hymns of faith and spiritual songs on Sunday in church, they would spend the rest of the week watching R-rated movies and listening to R-rated music. They learn by heart the lyrics of those profane songs. Their minds are filled with the sights and sounds of the filthy themes of those songs.

Let us not be foolish to embrace the secular music of our time. It is highly pernicious and certainly perilous to the Christians’ pursuit of holiness...

Purity of God’s Words

Written by Rev (Dr) Prabhudas Koshy Sunday, 01 February 2015

David, the King, trusted in all of God’s words because he believed them to be perfectly pure. In today’s article, I would like to consider the purity of God’s words based on David’s two testimonies

His first testimony in Psalm 12:6 is:

“The words of the LORD
are pure words: as silver
tried in a furnace of earth,
purified seven times...

In Any of You, An Evil Heart of Unbelief?

Written by Rev (Dr) Prabhudas Koshy Sunday, 25 January 2015

In Hebrews 3:12, churchgoers were forewarned, “Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.”

Everyone in the church is admonished to see to it that he has no evil heart. It is with brotherly love that such an admonition is given. The author of Hebrews addressed them as “brethren” to show that his admonition is given, not out of any hard feelings or distrust or jealousy, but rather out of a loving care for their spiritual safety...
