Proverbs 3:7 advises us, “Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.”

To think to oneself that it is wisdom to act according to one’s own idea, without the fear of the Lord, is very foolish. The Bible here warns us not to act according to one’s own idea without submitting to God. We must not act without trusting God and obeying His will. To be self-confident without yielding to God is a very unwise thing.

If we are to be wise in our lives, we must not be self-pleasing, but Godpleasing. So, we must constantly warn ourselves against being self-reliant and self-conceited. It is a very silly thing to believe that one has sufficient wisdom in oneself to do all things in life. Listen to the strong warning of Proverbs 28:26a – “He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool”. Proverbs 26:12 warns against a selfconceited person – “Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit? there is more hope of a fool than of him.”

So the Bible tells us, “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding” (Proverbs 3:5). When we trust and obey the LORD, evil will not abide with us. There is great spiritual safety in always being God-dependent and God-fearing.
