Proverbs 1:7 declares to us that “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” Likewise, Proverbs 9:10 says, “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.”

God’s Word promises everyone who fears the LORD that he will be furnished with wisdom. Do you desire to be wise? Then you must first fear the LORD. Fearing the LORD means that you acknowledge the LORD – who is eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God – as your God. Your heart must be filled with awe and reverence for the LORD. You must yield to His Word with faith and obedience. If you always listen to His Word and live in obedience to His Word, you will be guided by His great wisdom.

The fear of the LORD is the foundation upon which you must build your life. Your life must always stand in reverence of God and in obedience to His holy commandments. Then your life will be free from the foolishness of false doctrines, unholy counsels of worldly people and your own sins.

A person who would not yield to God’s instruction is foolish; his life will be troubled by his own sins and foolish actions. He who does not reverentially trust and obey God would not have God’s guidance and protection. Such a person may think to himself that he is clever, but his life will be filled with his own errors and sins!

When God instructs us to stand by His Word and reject all unholy advice of unbelieving and worldly people, we must humbly and reverentially obey God. God’s holy ways are more excellent than all the counsels of the unbelieving people. So, fear the LORD, labour to know His Word and live according to its wisdom.
