“But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.”
Through the prophet Isaiah, the Lord describes our actual spiritual state. The prophet gave us three descriptions of our spiritual condition.
Firstly, we are described as “an unclean thing”. The word “unclean” refers to something that is polluted and defiled. God’s Word is saying that the whole mankind is contaminated and tainted with sin.
Secondly, we are described as “filthy rags”. These are pieces of cloth soiled with foul excretions and filthy stuff! God finds every person as a dirty, mucky rag. Our lives have been tainted with disgusting sins. He hates the sins of our lives.
Thirdly, we are described as “the wind”. Like a storm that sweeps away everything in its path, we have been blown away by our sins. Sin is destructive, much like a tornado that blasts away houses and crops and trees. Sin wrecks the peace of individuals, families, the church, the nation, etc. It brings upon us God’s displeasure and wrath.
Having understood how God denounces us for our sins, let us humble ourselves before the Lord and seek His forgiveness. Let us also praise and thank Him for His grace and love that purge us through the blood of Christ, that we may be accepted of Him.
