“This is the LORD’S doing; it is marvellous in our eyes.”
Here the psalmist speaks of a marvellous act that the LORD has done. The marvellous doing of the LORD was mentioned by the psalmist in the preceding verse – “The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner” (Psalm 118:22). So the marvellous work that the LORD has done was to take the “stone” rejected by the builders and make it the “head stone”. By the way, the “head stone of the corner”, also known as “capstone”, is the major stone that is placed at the corner of a large building.
Jesus quoted Psalm 118:22-23 to refer to Himself in Matthew 21:24. Though the Jewish leaders (“the builders”) rejected Christ (“the stone”), the LORD God has made Him the “head stone” of the church. Though the religious leaders of the Jews rejected and killed Christ, God raise Him up from the dead and made Him the head of the church. Jesus’ greatness as the Saviour and Lord is preached everywhere for sinners to come to Him for salvation and blessings.
Though the Jews and Romans rejected, humiliated and crucified Christ, God had made Him the Great Saviour and Lord of His people. Today, Jesus Christ is exalted at the right-hand side of the Father in heaven. He is now “far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come” (Ephesians 1:21). Jesus’ resurrection, ascension and exaltation above all constitute the marvellous work God Himself has done. Oh, what a great work the LORD God has done to provide us such an exalted Saviour and Lord!
