“All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.”
Jesus said in Mark 7:23, “All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.” These words were spoken by our Lord Jesus after He had warned about wicked things that proceed from our hearts. Our hearts are very sinful. Jesus said, “For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness” (Mark 7:21-22).
Even the ancient prophets of God also warned God’s people against their own hearts. For example, the prophet Jeremiah said, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” (Jeremiah 17:9). Most of us do not recognise that our hearts are very corrupt.
If we do not recognise the evilness of our heart, we will fail to prevent ourselves from working out our evil thoughts. There are those who would tell us that we have a good heart and that we must believe in ourselves. But we must remember the warning of our Lord concerning evil deeds that proceed from our hearts.
Let us therefore humbly guard our thoughts. Whenever an evil thought arises, let us repent and ask the Lord to cleanse our hearts. Be alert against our own thoughts to prevent ourselves from committing evil works.
