“Discretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee.”
Here, the Hebrew word (mzimoth) that is translated as “discretion” indicates wisdom expressed in examining issues of life to avoid dangers. In other words, it denotes serious considerations about the nature and consequences of a decision, speech or action.
In this world of temptations and sins, we need discretion to live a triumphant Christian life. Satan has sent many deceivers, seducers and false teachers to ruin our Christian testimony. If discretion is not exercised, we will be greatly endangered by the wicked seductions of the world. Many Christians who did not exercise discretion have fallen into shameful sins, and have damaged their testimony for the Lord.
We must exercise our God-given mind to see whether our choices in life are in accordance with His Word. It is to guide us away from sin and shame that God has given us His Word. By checking whether our thoughts, words and actions are in accordance with God’s Word, we do keep ourselves from many dangers. This is the message of Psalm 119:9 – “Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word.”
Be a child who lives with discretion, and you will be kept safe from destructive sins and falsehood.
