“For his God doth instruct him to discretion, and doth teach him.”
The above words were mentioned as part of “the parable of a farmer” told by the prophet Isaiah. A farmer has various tasks to accomplish in order to have a good harvest. He needs much wisdom and skill to determine the right season, tools, farming methods for growing different kinds of grains, etc. He must also use proper techniques for plowing, sowing, threshing, harvesting, etc.
A knowledgeable farmer will not keep on plowing and turning the soil. After plowing, he prepares the soil and carefully sows the seed in accordance with what is proper for each grain. You can’t have the same approach for cultivating different kinds of grains. All such knowledge and skills come from the Lord, as affirmed by Isaiah: “For his God doth instruct him to discretion, and doth teach him.” A farmer is taught by God to care for his field and to do what is necessary to cultivate his produce. Farming intelligently is a God-given instinct!
The LORD our God is a powerful and wise God who provides counsel and wisdom. The same God who teaches the farmer to care for his wheat, barley, fitches and cumin will also teach us to have discretion and skill to accomplish all that is right, as He has purposed. If we trust in Him, He will help in equipping us with all the necessary abilities to do the work that He wants us to do in our lifetime. When He gives us the skill and discretion, we must humbly do our work with thanksgiving to God.
