Disappointment of the Wicked

Proverbs 11:7

“When a wicked man dieth, his expectation shall perish: and the hope of unjust men perisheth.”

People have great expectations concerning their earthly life and their endeavours. For instance, students want to score high marks, businessmen want to make lots of money, family people want to have beautiful houses and cars. Many people succeed in getting such expectations which they cherish.

However, the Bible reminds us that an unrepentant sinner (“wicked man”), no matter how successful his earthly life may be, will surely face his worst disappointment when he dies. This is because not only will all the hope of great wealth, health and pleasures all suddenly perish in death, he will also have no hope of eternal salvation and joy.

A man who dies without forgiveness of his sins will have no honour or happiness of heaven, but the disappointment of endless shame and suffering in hell. All the earthly glory and pleasures that he had chased after will not follow him. He shall have nothing to rejoice, but only dismay and sorrow. So, let us repent of our sins and follow the Lord Jesus, that we may escape God’s wrath and be spared of eternal disappointment in hell.
