“I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.”
Here Jesus tells us that we cannot bear spiritual fruit on our own. He plainly stated, “for without me ye can do nothing.” Just as the branch cannot bear fruit of itself without abiding in the vine, neither can we bear fruit unless we abide in Jesus Christ.
At the same time, Jesus also tells us a very important truth about being fruitful Christians. He says that if we “abide” in Him, we will bring forth much fruit. “Abide” means “continue”, or “remain”, or “dwell”. In other words, we must continually depend upon Christ to be fruit-bearing Christians.
There are times when believers fail to depend upon and obey Christ. If we at any time fail in fully abiding in Christ, we must quickly repent and renew our love and faith in Christ. Then His power and wisdom will flow through us like the life of the vine flows through the branches. If we abide in Him always, the Lord will make us fruitful Christians. Oh, how wonderful it is to be a blessing of Jesus to others!
