1 John 3:10
“In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.”
God’s Word divides people into two groups: “the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil”. God wants us to know about the spiritual state of ourselves and others. It is important to discern to whom we or others belong. We cannot just assume that everyone is good and pleasing to God.
Two characteristics are mentioned about those who are not God’s children. Firstly, we are told that “whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God”. In other words, everyone who shows little or no interest in doing things that are right before God, is not of God. Unrighteous actions show defiance and disobedience to God. Thus, we must avoid being friends of such.
Secondly, everyone who “loveth not his brother” is also not of God. A true child of God will manifest genuine love for God’s people. Those who are without brotherly love are not people who belong to God’s family. Let us avoid those who spread bitterness, quarrels and divisions among God’s people.
