“Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.”
A double-minded person, who claims to be a believer and yet acts without faith and obedience, will soon be sin-plagued. James the apostle labels double-minded people as “sinners”. James was reminding them that their unsteady faith, reflected by their vacillating between God and the world, does not prove them to be genuine believers or saints of the Lord, but rather sinners and even unbelievers (i.e. the unsaved).
So to all the double-minded people, the Word of God says, “Draw nigh to God… Cleanse your hands… and purify your hearts” (James 4:8). The Lord expects those who have turned away from Him to return to Him – no more wandering or backsliding from the Lord! Do not be far from Him.
Moreover, they are commanded to cleanse their hands. Through Isaiah the prophet, the Lord warned, “And when ye spread forth your hands, I will hide mine eyes from you: yea, when ye make many prayers, I will not hear: your hands are full of blood. Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes; cease to do evil” (Isaiah 1:15-16). The Lord expects all who call on His name to cease from all evil deeds and be clean before Him.
That’s not all. They must also seek the Lord’s forgiveness, even the cleansing of their sins, so that they may be made pure by the sanctifying work of the Lord. Only the Lord can give us renewed hearts, even pure hearts, to serve Him acceptably.
