“Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh: for the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.”
God’s Word prohibits us not only from becoming drunkards or gluttons, but also from being found in the company of such persons. “Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh” (v. 20). We should reject their invitation to join them, even if they were to promise that we would not be told to consume strong drinks with them.
Two major reasons why we should not join the company of drunkards and gluttons are:
(i) Being in the bad company which is a commonplace of temptation that the devil uses to draw men to their sins, and
(ii) Being in the bad company which would also cause us to suffer the shame and hurt caused by their drunken stupor.
Here we are also told that dire situations will come upon and bother the drunkards and gluttons. Their unrestrained pursuit of their cravings will exhaust their resources. They will be rid of their wealth and whatever progress they have so far attained. They will soon move from revelry to rags!
