The work of the Gospel at Alem Gena began in January 2009 with two persons attending the Lord’s Day service. God sustained the work and gave the increase despite insurmountable trials. Our evangelistic efforts in the neighbourhood bore fruits and to date, the church membership has grown steadily through baptism or transfer of membership.
Our primary focus is to spread the Gospel to the community in our neighbourhood to win more souls for Christ. We have a team of five believers which goes out every Thursday afternoon to evangelize the people. Though the harvest is plenteous, the ground is hard; but we trust the power of the risen Christ to give us good success as we obey Him. Members are also encouraged to evangelize their siblings, their friends and neighbours.
By God’s mercy, we are also preparing to go into the rural villages adjacent to Alem Gena to preach the Gospel. These villagers are mainly animists who are devotees of ancestral spirits, while the rest are adherents to the Ethiopian Coptic Church. We need much prayer for the fruitfulness of this great work.
Moreover, we have an evangelistic children’s ministry on Saturdays. In conjunction with this, we also started a kindergarten that gives us better access to the community. We need more skilled and committed believers to help in these areas. May God raise faithful men and women to give the light of Christ to this sin-darkened world.
This congregation of Addis Ababa was started and nurtured by Rev Ephrem Chiracho until recently, who is now serving the Lord in Alem Gena. Pr Engida Tefera has been appointed as the resident preacher of the congregation in Addis Ababa since May 2012. Preacher Imane Dola co-labours with Pr Engida in the ministry of the church.
By God’s grace and enabling, the various ministries of the church include the following:
Preaching and Teaching Ministry: Besides the preaching of God’s Word during the Lord’s Day worship service, Pr Imane and Pr Engida take turns to teach topical lessons to the adults through the Adults’ Bible School. We also conduct catechism classes using the 20 lessons of Basic Bible Doctrines written by Rev Dr Prabhudus Koshy. On top of that, Pr Engida also conducts marital counselling and personal ministry training from time to time.
Our church’s Bible study is held on Friday evenings (5.30pm–7.00pm). Thus far, we have studied several books such as 1 Corinthians, Genesis, Romans, Galatians, Acts, James, Exodus and the book of Revelation.

As we continue serving the Lord in our respective humble capacities, may the Lord prosper all our weekly church ministries/programmes, and through these, grant spiritual maturity to members of the Addis Ababa congregation, to the glory of His name.
